Liza and I have been having lots of talks about choices that we make daily.
She is reading a book called, "The Choice Theory" by William Glasser
that has inspired these talks. I wanted to blog some of my
own thoughts about what I have learned. Maybe some of my rambling
thoughts can be of worth to anyone who reads this.
William Glasser is world renowned psychiatrist who has studied the
behavior of people for many years. He has an institution in L.A. that was
started in 1967 and more than 100,000 people have successfully
completed its counseling program. He has counseled thousands of
men and women who claim to be depressed. Aside from a chemical
imbalance that is rare but surely exists in choice individuals, he claims
that men and women are not depressed, but rather choose to depress.
Of the many years he has studied men and women, in every
circumstance, he has come to one conclusion that, if applied, will
help people realize and live in happiness and contentment.
1- Change what you want.
Or
2- Change what you're doing.
He said that of every individual that has done this
and made the decision to change their desires or actions
has no longer claimed to be depressed,
or in reality chosen to depress.

Before Liza read this book, we talked about choice
and the decision we have to choose our happiness. The more I learn,
the more I realize life is not fair and I can not compare my
successes or failures with anyone elses. It has been interesting to
see how I choose to react to every situation with which I am faced.
I am ultimately responsible for my thoughts, actions and emotions.
Some emotions are a direct result of chemical influences in our bodies,
but it is completely and entirely my decision to feel the way I do.

but it is completely and entirely my decision to feel the way I do.
Something I have come to realize more and more that I go through life
is that I do not know other people's circumstances and it is not just or
even realistic to assume that I do. Because of this, I choose
not to assume I know what someone is going through. This choice has
shown me how imperfect I am and how I need to make a change in my life.

Now we all get our feelings hurt and get offended in life. That is a constant.
If I happen to get offended, it is me who controls my feelings as
opposed to the common belief that others make me feel the way I do.
I have the power to take charge of my thoughts, actions and emotions.
All being said, I have made the choice to be happy in this life.
Someone will cross my path and present me with the choice to
become offended or hurt or whatever. I will strive to choose
to control myself, my emotions and my feelings because
I am my own master.
Life just became a lot more interesting...
In the end I want to extend an invitation to anyone who reads this blog,
to join me in striving to choose to be happy by being their own master.
If you would like to learn more about "The Choice Theory," you can find
it on Amazon.com for about $10.

I'll join you Jas! Although I am already very happy and choose to be regardless of circumstances. I also want to read the book. Thanks for sharing!
Jason thanks so much for your post! I'm totally with you on this! About a week ago I let myself get so frustrated over a couple things that were completely out of my control and I decided to just let the frustration lie... at least for most of the drive home that night. Since then I've had some great experiences that helped to once again wake me up to the fact that life is pretty dang good in spite of the occasional frustration. In fact, life is altogether beautiful.
I'll join ya...it makes sense to me. Between this book you jsut taught meand the one Im reading now {The Last Lecture} I better die filling I've accomplished everything I need to and be HAPPY about it!
Well, what you say rings true! So much that I purchased a hardback on Alibris for $2.20 and sent it to my brother Mike. He and his family struggle with serious depression. Thanks for the information....this could be life changing for them!
